You’re not a river - so stop going with the flow in your business

“Seeing where it goes” is not a strategy - in dating or in business.

Let me put it bluntly: if someone said “Let’s just see where this goes” on a first date, and you were looking for a relationship?

🚩 Flagged.

Not because they’re rude - but because you’re clear. You know what you want.

Now ask yourself this:

Why are you so clear in dating, but so vague in business?

Too many Virtual Assistants - brilliant, capable, service-driven people - are building businesses on vibes and guesswork.

No plan. No clarity. Just hope and a to-do list full of tasks.

But guess what?

You are not a river.

You weren’t made to go with the flow.

“Going with the flow” isn’t harmless - it’s a turbulent detour

Here’s what “Go with the flow” usually looks like in practice:

  • Saying yes to misaligned clients because they asked nicely

  • Pricing based on fear, not value

  • Overcommitting and then overdelivering out of guilt

  • Cancelling your CEO time because someone’s email felt “urgent”

  • Making decisions reactively instead of intentionally

And what does that lead to?

🚩 A business that serves everyone but you

🚩 Resentment under the surface

🚩 Stalled growth masked as “busy”

🚩 Feeling like you're winging it, even after years in

That’s not strategy - that’s survival.

And it’s no way to build a business that supports your life.

So what does “Having a plan” actually look like?

Let’s me be clear:

I’m not talking about the kind of business plan a bank wants when you’re applying for a loan.

I’m talking about a working plan - something clear enough to guide you, flexible enough to evolve, and rooted in your goals.

Your plan is your permission slip:

  • To say no.

  • To stay focused.

  • To check yourself before you chase shiny things.

  • To remember why you started in the first place.

It doesn’t have to be pretty.

It just has to be real.

What gets easier when you have a plan

  • You know who your ideal clients are

  • You get clear on your offers (and what’s off the table)

  • You stop winging capacity and start managing it

  • You can plan and take time off without guilt

  • You know your baseline income to stay afloat — and your stretch goals to reinvest and grow

  • You show up with intention, not just activity

When you’re clear, you can be consistent.

And when you’re consistent, momentum builds.

A plan is a structure - not a strait-jacket

People think having a plan will box them in.

But the truth? It does the opposite.

A plan frees you up to make better decisions faster.

  • To filter advice.

  • To lead clients instead of being led by them.

  • To build a business that reflects you - not just one that reacts to what’s happening around you.

It’s not rigid. It’s rhythm.

Don’t situationship your business

You wouldn’t float aimlessly through your love life if what you wanted was real partnership.

So why float aimlessly through your business - the very thing funding your freedom?

  • You don’t need a 42-page document.

  • You need direction.

  • You need clarity.

  • You need agency - the kind that makes space for your life and your growth.
